Meet Your Therapist
Hello and welcome! My name is Shawna Bernath and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Colorado. I graduated with my undergraduate degree in Family Studies and Human Services and went on to get my masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapist shortly after. In 2014, my family and I moved from Kansas and we're happy to call this beautiful state our home!
I believe in utilizing a strength based approach and an attachment based lense while working with clients. We take time in session learning skills and practicing them in the moment through use of role plays to pinpoint specific barriers to identifying and communicating our needs to some, while risking vulnerability with those closest to us.
I provide support through in-session activities as well as worksheets to continue use of skills between sessions. I strive to provide a safe and nonjudgemental therapeutic space to process thoughts and behaviors that come from emotional triggers.
Let me be your village in supporting you through those challenging and unexpected times!

MY CREDENTIALS
Trainings:
CBT: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a vicious cycle. CBT aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts.
TFCBT: Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps children address distorted or upsetting beliefs and attributions and learn skills to help them cope with ordinary life stressors. It also helps parents who were not abusive to cope effectively with their own emotional distress and develop skills that support their children.
EFT: Emotion Focused Therapy is attachment based and conceptualizes the negative, rigid interaction patterns and absorbing negative affect that typify distress in couple relationships in terms of emotional disconnection and insecure attachment.
PMT-O: Parent Management Training - Oregon is for parents of kids up to age 12 and it helps parents learn several skills to manage behavior. It's often recommended when the parent and child have more positive interactions already but the child's behavior is an immediate problem.
