Top 7 Behavioral Concerns for Children. What do you notice?

ree

What are some reasons you and other parents search for a child therapist? It could be some behaviors that you notice get in the way of your child getting things done around the house. They could be struggling to remember assignments for school or struggling with friends. Some struggles children reported in my office are time management, organization while balancing the school homework load, and social engagements with friends from school. There have been many different concerns that parents brought to my attention as the school year moves forward. The impact of these behavior concerns can cause many disruptions in your family's daily activities, making it challenging to complete necessary tasks and responsibilities to be and feel sucessful.

Here are the top 7 childhood behavioral concerns that most parents will seek therapy for:

  1. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder): ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects attention and impulse control. Children with ADHD may have difficulty paying attention, following instructions, and completing tasks.

  2. Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD): ODD is characterized by persistent defiance, anger, and hostility towards authority figures, such as parents, teachers, and other adults.

  3. Anxiety: Anxiety can manifest in many forms, including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, and specific phobias. Children with anxiety may experience excessive worry, avoidance behaviors, and physical symptoms such as headaches and stomach aches.

  4. Depression: Depression can affect children and adolescents, leading to feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in things they once enjoyed.

  5. Conduct Disorder: Conduct disorder is a serious behavioral and emotional disorder in which a child engages in persistent behavior that violates the rights of others or societal norms, such as bullying, lying, theft, and destruction of property.

  6. Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD): ASD is a developmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. Children with autism may have difficulty with social interactions and communication, repetitive behaviors, and restrictive interests.

  7. Learning Disabilities: Learning disabilities can affect a child's ability to process information and perform certain academic tasks, such as reading, writing, and arithmetic.

These are some of the most common behavioral concerns for children discussed by their parents and the DSM 5 descriptions, but it is important to note that every child is unique and may experience different challenges. If you have continued questions of concerns, seeking the advice of a professional can help determine the best course of action for addressing a child's unique needs and if any further testing or diagnostic assessment is needed.
